Signal head test bench
Measures the luminous intensity and beam direction of lens-type and LED signal heads on an optical bench and checks the electrical parameters of lamps and LED modules.
We will send photos and drawings of the equipment on request via the contacts page.
Equipment
Description
The bench is designed for testing the heads of mast and dwarf signals after repair and before installation on site. It determines the axial luminous intensity and its distribution across the beam spread angle, the correct focusing of the lens assembly, the colour and integrity of the filters, and the electrical parameters of lamps and LED modules: current draw, filament voltage and the insulation resistance of the circuits to the housing.
The core of the bench is an optical rail along which a carriage with a photometric head travels, and a turntable with a mounting fixture for the signal head. The operator fits the head, switches on the lamp or module from an adjustable source and takes luminous intensity readings on axis and with the table turned to set angles in the horizontal and vertical planes. A darkened tube between the head and the photodetector excludes stray light, and the measuring unit converts illuminance to luminous intensity taking the measuring distance into account.
The electrical section of the bench comprises an adjustable voltage source for lamps, a supply for LED modules and an insulation tester, all built into the instrument rack. On request the bench is equipped with fixtures for heads with 139 and 212 mm lens assemblies, adapters for dwarf signals, a computer with result processing software and an extended rail for measurements at a longer distance.
Features
Design features
- Photometry on an optical bench — Luminous intensity is measured on axis and across the beam angles as the table is turned; the result is converted to intensity for the measuring distance.
- Lens-type and LED heads — Separate supplies for incandescent lamps and LED modules allow heads of both types to be tested without reconfiguration.
- Focus check — The angular distribution of luminous intensity reveals lamp offset from the focus of the lens assembly and helps adjust the lamp holder.
- Insulation and circuit check — The built-in insulation tester measures the insulation resistance of the head wiring, and the measuring unit measures the current and voltage of each signal aspect.
- Fixtures for the customer's diameters — The turntable accepts fixtures for mast and dwarf signal heads with 212 and 139 mm lens assemblies, according to the list of signals in use on the railway.
