Equipment

Description

The diesel engine tilter is used in diesel locomotive repair sections to rotate an engine or its block about the longitudinal axis. Mounting the engine in the tilter opens access from below to the crankshaft, main and connecting-rod bearings, cylinder liners and the oil system, eliminating work in cramped positions and reducing the labor input of disassembly and assembly.

The engine is secured by its standard feet or flanges in two rotating frames mounted on end columns. The synchronized column drive rotates the frame with the engine at low speed; the worm gearboxes are self-locking, so the engine is held at any angular position without additional stops. Control is from a pendant station, and the operator has a full view of the working area.

The design consists of two columns with rotating frames, electromechanical drives with worm gearboxes, a set of adapter plates for the specific engine and a control station. One column is movable along guide rails, allowing the tilter base to be adjusted to the engine length. The columns are anchored to a foundation or to embedded elements in the shop floor.

The tilter can be supplemented with a frame lifting mechanism to align the rotation axis with the engine's center of gravity, oil collection trays, service platforms and interchangeable adapter plates for several engine series. On request, a version for a separate cylinder block or with increased load capacity is manufactured.

Features

Design features

  • 360° rotation — The engine can be set to any position for access to the crankcase, cylinder block and engine-mounted auxiliaries.
  • Self-locking drive — Worm gearboxes hold the engine in the set position when the drive stops and when the power supply is cut.
  • Adjustable base — The movable column travels along guide rails, so engines of different lengths can be mounted on the same tilter.
  • Synchronized rotation — The drives of both columns are controlled together; frame skew is monitored by position sensors, and movement is blocked on mismatch.
  • Interchangeable adapter plates — The plate set is made to the mounting dimensions of the customer's engines and replaced without dismantling the columns.
