Rheostat load test unit for diesel locomotives
Load unit for run-in and acceptance testing of diesel locomotive generator sets under loads of up to 3000 kW with automatic parameter recording.
We will send photos and drawings of the equipment on request via the contacts page.
Equipment
Description
The rheostat load test unit is designed for run-in and acceptance testing of diesel locomotive generator sets after running repairs and overhauls. The traction generator output is dissipated in load resistors, which makes it possible to check the engine at every controller notch, record the generator's load characteristic, adjust the power regulator and evaluate fuel consumption without sending the locomotive out on the line.
The locomotive is connected to the unit with power cables through a terminal post. Load is applied in steps: switchgear connects resistor sections on the operator's command or automatically according to a preset test program, while the measuring system continuously records generator voltage, current and power, crankshaft speed, and water and oil temperatures. A test report is generated at the end of the cycle.
The unit comprises a load resistor bank made of heat-resistant strip with forced-air cooling, a switching cabinet with power contactors, an operator station with a control panel and automated measuring system, and a set of connecting cables and sensors. The resistor bank is rated for outdoor installation; for indoor placement a version with hot-air exhaust ducts is available.
At the customer's request the unit can be fitted with a fuel consumption measuring system, per-cylinder exhaust gas temperature sensors, a remote panel for operation from the driver's cab and a module for exporting results to the depot database. Voltage and current ranges are selected for the traction generators of the specific locomotive series.
Features
Design features
- Testing at every controller notch — Stepped load control allows the full diesel-generator characteristic to be run from idle to rated power.
- Automatic parameter recording — The measuring system logs electrical and thermal parameters at a set interval and generates a report from the test results.
- Resistor and generator protection — Resistor grid temperature monitoring, start interlock when the fans are stopped, load disconnection on overcurrent.
- Outdoor design — The resistor bank is housed in a protected enclosure and rated for year-round operation on an open depot yard.
- Test programs per series — The sequence of load steps and hold times is set separately for each locomotive series and stored in the system memory.
